The Life Aquatic

Movie Poster

In order to best capture the handmade stylings of a Wes Anderson movie, I designed this entire poster using scans of colored paper cutouts. The movie itself is a character deconstruction of Bill Murray’s character, Steve Zissou. For the composition of the poster I decided to build his face using sea life imagery.

Process

Problem to Solve: Wes Anderson fans expect his movies and the materials involving them to have a certain handcrafted look and feel. Design a Poster that appeals to the audience and fanbase of the movie The Life Aquatic.

Solution: To achieve the handcrafted look of Wes Anderson’s visual stylings I chose to create this poster out of papercraft. For the composition I decided to make the main character Steve Zissou’s face out of marine life, the movie is a character study of him so I felt it was only appropriate to visually deconstruct his face as well.

Research: I had not seen the movie beforehand, so I had to watch it and acquaint myself with the visual style and story. I also researched other posters that had been made for the movie to find a niche for myself that stayed true to the tone of the movie.

Overview: With a limited time frame, it was difficult to capture the uniquely handmade stylings of a Wes Anderson film. In the end I settled on making Bill Murray’s face out of papercraft sea life.

Timeframe: 3 weeks: February-March 2026
